Workers remember Ka Lando Olalia and Ka Leonor Alay-ay: victims of state-sponsored murder

Ka Lando Olalia"After 20 years, justice remains elusive for Rolando "Ka Lando" Olalia and Ka Leonor Alay-ay. Their brutal deaths in the hands of the government are irrefutable proof that state-sponsored violence and terror against advocates of social change continue and now even more escalating under the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo administration," said KMU Chairperson Elmer Labog as they commemorate Olalia's death anniversary.

From 2001 to present, the labor group has recorded 74 cases of political killings involving workers, labor leaders, trade union organizers and labor advocates. "Like Ka Lando and Ka Leonor, the families of Ding Fortuna, Ric Ramos, the Hacienda Luisita 7 and many others who were killed by this regime have not received justice," Labog said.

On the afternoon of November 13, 1986, the lifeless bodies of Rolando Olalia, then Chairman of militant labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) and his colleague and driver Leonor Alay-ay were found in Antipolo, Rizal. The chief suspects in the murder are ranking leaders of the Rebolusyonaryong Alyansang Makabansa (RAM).

Their bodies bore torture marks and gunshot wounds in the head. They were hogtied and their mouths were stuffed with newspaper. Their bodies were severely mutilated and beyond recognition. The scar on Olalia's leg was the only identifying mark that confirmed the labor leader's brutal demise.

Ka Lando, as he was fondly known to workers and his colleagues in the labor movement came from a union meeting at Ajinomoto on the night of November 12 when he and Ka Leonor were abducted by heavily armed men. When he failed to come home that night, his family and colleagues at the KMU knew something very wrong was going on.

"Like what the Marcos and Aquino governments did to Ka Bert and Ka Lando, the Arroyo administration is illegally detaining Anakpawis Rep. and KMU Chairman Emeritus Crispin "Ka Bel" Beltran. Despite massive protests and demands from local and international legislators, people's groups and trade unions, the government refuses to release Ka Bel and keeps the veteran labor leader as their 'trophy catch' in attempts to derail and incapacitate Anakpawis and KMU. But they are failing, on November 16, workers together with our supporters and allied labor groups from various countries will hold an international protest against trade union repression and political killings in the Philippines," Labog said.

At the time of his brutal murder, Ka Lando was the second chairperson of KMU. He succeeded his father, the late Felixberto "Ka Bert" Olalia who became KMU's founding Chairman in 1980. The older Olalia also suffered in the hands of the Marcos fascist dictatorship. Marcos had Ka Bert arrested and detained on Aug. 13, 1982, known among workers and activists as the day of the infamous labor crackdown. Due to his incarceration, Ka Bert's health deteriorated and later succumbed to pneumonia in December 1983.
