Aquino responsible for Sabah deaths – KMU

Labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno condemned Pres. Noynoy Aquino today over the escalating number of deaths on the side of the Sulu Sultanate’s forces in Sabah, saying the chief executive is responsible for the deaths because he gave the Malaysian government the go signal to carry out offensives and failed to stand up for the country’s territorial claims over Sabah.

Faced with the occupation of the Sulu Sultanate’s forces of Lahad Datu, Pres. Aquino merely called for a study of the country’s territorial claims to Sabah, questioned Sultan Jamalul Kiram III’s motives, blamed Kiram in advance for the deaths and destruction that would result from the sultan’s actions, called on Kiram to order his troops to withdraw, and threatened to arrest Kiram’s forces upon returning to the country.

“Aquino should be upholding the country’s territorial claims over Sabah and try to find a peaceful resolution to the dispute. Instead, he is treating the country’s claims as if these are a thing of the past, is agreeing with Malaysia’s attack against Kiram’s forces, and is even preparing public opinion for their deaths,” said Elmer “Bong” Labog, KMU chairperson said.

“Aquino has blood in his hands and is to blame for the deaths of our fellow Filipinos in Sabah. It is revolting how he is allowing Filipinos to die without any attempt to find a peaceful resolution to the issue,” he added.

KMU also slammed Aquino’s arrogant attitude towards the Sulu Sultanate’s demands, saying it reflects his government’s attitude in handling people’s grievances.

“This government is deaf and blind towards the people’s interests. Aquino always lets his haciendero arrogance prevail over the people’s legitimate demands. This is what’s happening in Hacienda Luisita, this is what is happening in the peace process,” Labog said.

KMU said Aquino’s attitude towards the country’s territorial claims over Sabah contrasts sharply with his attitude towards the country’s claims to the Spratlys and Panatag Shoal.

“It is clear that Aquino was merely obeying the US government’s dictates when he stood up for the country’s sovereignty over Spratlys and Panatag Shoal. The US is fomenting Asian countries’ territorial disputes with China in order to try to justify the expansion of US military presence in the Asia-Pacific,” Labog said.

“The country has compelling reasons to assert sovereignty over the Spratlys and Panatag Shoal, but we have more compelling reasons to assert our sovereigny over Sabah. The fact that Aquino is not upholding the country’s sovereignty over Sabah shows that his assertion in the Spratlys and Panatag issues is not for our country’s sovereign interest but for US interests in the Asia-Pacific,” he added.

The labor center called on the country’s workers and all Filipinos to join protestso n March 8, International Women’s Day, and condemn Aquino’s treachery towards the country’s territorial claim to Sabah, his puppetry to the US, and his wanton disregard for Filipinos’ lives.

“We call all patriotic Filipinos and our Muslim brothers and sisters to condemn Aquino’s treachery towards our claim in Sabah, our national sovereignty and most of all the Filipino people,” Labog said.

“Let us march in the streets and show this government that we are fed up with Aquino’s puppetry to the US and gross disregard for the interests and lives of Filipinos,” he ended.
