Labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno condemned today the Call Center Association of the Philippines for opposing calls for P125 across-the-board wage hike nationwide, saying even the country’s call center employees need a significant salary increase.
CCAP declared its position on House Bill 375, also known as the P125 Wage Hike Bill, in the launching of the 4th Call Center Fitness Program just before Holy Week.
Last January, the Bureau of Local Employment said that the salary of entry-level call center employees in the US would amount to P70,000 to P75,000 – a far cry from the P15,000 being received by their counterparts in the country.
The BLE also said that the Business Process Outsourcing sector raked in $11 Billion in profits from the country in 2010.
“While their salaries are higher than those of most Filipino workers, call center agents also need a significant salary hike. They are working hard and are bringing in huge profits for call center companies,” said Elmer “Bong” Labog, KMU chairperson.
“Call centers are such masters in micromanagement that they are able to make their employees work almost all of the time. They impose strict rules on employees when it comes to observing time for work and meeting over-the-top work quotas,” he added.
KMU also said that industry insiders say that call center salaries have stagnated over the years and are in general decline.
“Since the entry of the call center industry into the country in the early 2000s, there is a downward trend in the salaries being received by the majority of call center agents. There is a growing sentiment among call center employees that the salary they receive is not enough,” Labog said.
“We should also recognize the sacrifices, in terms of lost family time, that call center agents are making just to earn a living. They are also exposed to a lot of health problems because of the nature of their work,” he added.
KMU said the government of Pres. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III is using both micro, small, and medium enterprises on the one hand, and call center companies on the other to oppose calls for a significant wage hike.
“We believe that it is the Aquino government that’s behind the orchestrated rejection of calls for a significant wage hike made by various groups. It is using both small and big capitalists to try to make up for its failure to provide convincing reasons against our call,” Labog said.
“Call center companies can and must grant a significant wage hike to their employees. Even call center agents deserve a significant wage hike,” he added.

What's with these call centers? Do they think that they are giving higher salaries to their employees and that's the reason why they oppose wage hike? Or, maybe, they are just afraid that their employees will also demand higher salaries?
If not for their employees, these call centers will never exist. There should be a kind of give-and-take situation so that everybody is happy.

Those call centers that are opposing wake hikes should really be slammed! Are they not ashamed of what they are doing is exploitation? Sure, their clients are very satisfied since they can avail the best service with affordable price but that will really make the call center agents feel very oppressed. I just hope that they will reconsider by making the salaries of call centers agents a little big higher, say, P40,000. That would be enough. And to think that those lady call center agents are vulnerable to diseases like breast cancer because of graveyard shifts.
