Current Philippine situation also warrants an ‘assertion of people’s will’

Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) hails the victory of the Egyptian people in ousting their fascist and exploitative president Mubarak, and sees their triumph as a timely reminder of the power of collective action we Filipinos have already demonstrated twice, and should be ready to demonstrate again.

The Egyptian people’s determination and unity were able to outlast the violence of the Mubarak regime. They have succeeded in toppling a dictatorship maintained and deeply supported by the US imperialist that brought tyranny, repression, extreme poverty and unemployment in their country.

Over the past months, we have been witnessing massive protests and uprisings against tyranny, unemployment, low wages, price hikes, and budget cuts on basic social services all over the world.

The Egyptian people’s victory is another reminder to the world of the potency of collective action and how can it effect change. This is also another proof that only through unity and vigilance can we triumph over social injustices.

 A reminder to Aquino

President Aquino himself said “the aspirations for a more free and fair society are universal,” but the way his administration runs our country is far from getting us to such a society.

The Filipino people face successive price hikes in basic commodities and services, amid landlessness, stagnant wages and low job opportunities.

As part of the family who reaped fruits of the First People Power’s victory, Aquino should very well know that the will of the people holds supremacy. If his government would remain deaf and stubborn to the basic needs and rights of the Filipino masses, we will not hesitate to assert again the will of the people against an administration that refuses to obey it. #
