Amid various indications that Mrs. Arroyo is trying to extend her hold on power, labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno today called on the Filipino workers and people to prepare for a “showdown” with the administration, saying Arroyo’s prolonged stay in power will only mean the continuation of Arroyo’s crimes.

Cooking up no-el, no-proc

“The indications are there for everyone to see. Something’s cooking in the kitchen of Mrs. Arroyo, something poisonous for the Filipino workers and people. While political forces are busy campaigning for the elections, we should create a heat that Mrs. Arroyo can’t stand to boot her out of the kitchen,” said Elmer “Bong” Labog, KMU chairperson.

“Given her grave crimes against the Filipino workers and people, it is in the best interest of Mrs. Arroyo to stay in power. She is scared to death to face the consequences of her actions, to face prosecution and punishment – and she should be,” added Labog.

The labor leader cited the implementation of the flawed automated election system (AES) and the presence of pro-Arroyo officials in key government posts as “preparations” for a crucial “turning point” which will allow Arroyo to retain her position and take further steps – such as amending the Constitution and declaring martial law – to keep herself in power.

“While the no-el (no elections) scenario remains a threat, it seems that the regime is more likely to push for a no-proc (no proclamation) scenario. There will likely be a full or partial failure of the AES and pro-Arroyo officials in key government offices will likely ensure that Mrs. Arroyo can do whatever she wants,” said Labog.

“The turning point will therefore most likely happen after May 10. We therefore urge the Filipino workers and people not just to guard our votes, but to exercise vigilance towards the twists and turns of the elections and Mrs. Arroyo’s moves to stay in power,” Labog added.

CJ appointment, absence at PNPA

Labog said the recent Supreme Court decision upholding Mrs. Arroyo’s right to appoint a new Chief Justice and her absence in the graduation rites of the Philippine National Police Academy show that the president will brook no opposition to her scheme.

“She will use her control of her appointees and other officials to twist legality according to her wishes. She will not show an inch of civility towards officials who express opposition to her plans. With these moves, it is clear that she cannot be trusted to hand over power peacefully to a new president,” Labog said.

“That is why workers and the people should force her to do so. We should spread awareness about Mrs. Arroyo’s moves and join protests against these. No less than a showdown of force with her regime is necessary to remove her from power. We are called upon to prepare for this, a possible people’s uprising,” Labog concluded. #
