CEBU CITY - The militant labor group Alyansa sa Mamumuo sa Sugbo-Kilusang Mayo Uno (AMA-Sugbo-KMU) yesterday urged local officials to end disbursements for “grandiose” ASEAN Summit activities. The group wanted allocations for the summit events re-channeled to aid the hundreds of victims of typhoon Reming which recently ravaged the Bicol Region.

Wennie Badayos, chair of AMA-Sugbo-KMU, expressed disbelief after hearing reports that Mandaue City has set aside P1M to hire an events organizer for a lunch and fashion show for the spouses of the heads of states.

“Our local leaders should be sensible enough to instead use the money for ASEAN activities to relief and rescue operations in Bicol. It is the peak of immorality and insensitivity if our leaders continue wasting people’s money while our countrymen in Bicol are suffering,” Badayos said.

“It is time for Cebuanos to repay the kindness our fellow Filipinos extended to us when Cebu was devastated by Typhoon Ruping in 1990,” said Badayos.
