“Gloria and her lapdogs in Congress should bury their dream of ever having their bid for Charter Change see the light of day. And this is not merely because the Supreme Court has twice junked the administration’s bogus People’s Initiative to modify the constitution, it is because of the fact that the Filipino people long ago gave their verdict on it: no change in the constitution will ever come to pass while Gloria is still clinging desperately in power.”
This was the statement of Omar Bantayan, secretary general of Kilusang Mayo Uno-Southern Mindanao Region, following Tuesday’s announcement of the high court that it has denied with finality the motion for reconsideration (MR) filed by Gloria’s brainchild Sigaw ng Bayan and the Office of the Solicitor General. The two parties sought to reconsider the SC’s October 25 ruling that discredited the petition of People’s Initiative, calling it a “grand deception” and “gigantic fraud.”
Bantayan said that while the SC has again sided with the people’s interest, it should unconditionally pull the plug on any other attempts of the administration to push Cha-Cha. “By hinting RA 6735 as a possible legal relief, the high court has put the people’s victory on a tentative state.” The SC posited that other petitions for amending the constitution may be viable, as long it complies with RA 6735. The act states that only one subject of the constitution may be petitioned to be changed, and not the entire charter. “In any case, the people’s resolute stance against Gloria’s Cha-Cha—in any form or method—will surely be more decisive,” he added.
Bantayan also derided Gloria’s dogs in Congress in their attempt for the ‘final push’—the Constitutional Assembly. “In the next weeks, we are sure to see de Venecia, Nograles, et. al. brush aside other more important people issues to accommodate Malacanang’s demand to railroad the formation of the ConAss. They will disregard the mounting people’s protests against Cha-Cha and try to convince other representatives to follow suit.”
“But the people already know that behind the promises for a better economy that the Cha-Cha tries to peddle, this administration’s hell bent attempt to cook up a new constitution will only favor Gloria’s continuing perpetuation in power and US imperialist plunder of our resources. If there is anyone who shall soon see the meaning of a ‘final push,’ it will be no other than Gloria… for the people will finally push her out of power,” Bantayan concluded.
